皆さん、こんにちは。
大阪市阿倍野区にある英会話スクール『アイツーアイ』です。
今日、ご紹介するフレーズは
play it by ear
意味は プランを立てず、その場の状況やノリに合わせて行動する つまり臨機応変に対応する です。
このフレーズの由来は、16世紀にさかのぼります。
当時 “ear = 耳” は 音と音程を認識する能力(the ability to recognize sounds and musical intervals)を
意味し、音感が良い事を“have a good ear,”と表現しました。
音楽家が楽譜を見ず、音を聞いて即興で演奏していたことから、『自分で作る』という意味を持つようになったようです。
例えばこんな感じで使います。
(例文)
My parents are complete opposites: my mother likes everything planned in detail and my father always wants to play things
by ear.
私の両親は正反対の性格です。母は何事もきちんと計画を立ててるする事が好きですが、父はいつも、あまり計画を立てず、その都度臨機応変に動きたいのです。
