今日ご紹介するフレーズは
ace in the hole
意味は、奥の手、とっておきの切り札 です。
The “hole” in ace in the hole is the hole card, or the one that is dealt facedown and not exposed until the showdown.
ace in the hole の “hole”とは伏せたカード、または、裏向きに配られたカードの事で、通常土壇場までは見せずに持っています。
Since an ace ranks higher than other cards in a suit, it is presumed that having an ace held there gives a decisive advantage, so ace in the hole has come to mean ” an effective and decisive argument or resource held in reserveエース（ace）はトランプの中では他のカードよりも一番位が高く、エースも持っていれば相手に対して決定的に有利になります、その事から、ace in the hole というフレーズは、議論や状況が停滞している時などに、効果的そして決定的な、『奥の手』『とっておきの切り札』という意味を持つようになりました。

Shohei Ohtani is the Angels’ ace in the hole.
大谷翔平はエンジェルスのとっておきの切り札です。
George seems awfully confident.
ジョージはひどく自信があるように見える。
He must have an ace in the hole.

昨晩のタレントショウでのボブを見た？
Yes he really didn’t do well until he started dancing.
ええ、ダンスするまでは、あんまり良くなかったわね。
